Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon features over 120 dungeons including special Meowth Dungeons

Image 1

A leaked scan of this month's CoroCoro has reveals that Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon will be by far the largest title in the series yet. On top of a complete Pokédex, Super Mystery Dungeon will feature over 120 randomly-generated dungeons across 5 continents to crawl through, including new "Meowth Dungeons".

For anyone who has played a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon title before, the news of a whopping 120 dungeons is both exciting and a little bit overwhelming. Having such a large array of dungeons will be appropriate considering that the game features just about every single Pokémon that has been found in the game's universe, but imagining a scope of exploration that large is difficult to do. Speaking from personal experience, the limited number of dungeons in past games was more than enough for me. Super Mystery Dungeon may just go on forever.

The special "Meowth Dungeons" seems to be a distant relative of the Zero Isle dungeons found in previous Mystery Dungeon titles. When players step foot in any of these dungeons, a special force will weaken them and drop their levels to Level 5. CoroCoro states that these dungeons will have unique rules, but the magazine does not go into specifics outside of that.

There is no information as to just how large these dungeons will be, but I would assume it's safe to say that they will be reminiscent of previous series dungeons considering this installation allows players to recruit 717 of the 718 available Pokémon (Hoopa is a special case). Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon will launch on Nintendo 3DS on November 20.

Project Morpheus ready to immerse players as PlayStation VR by the first half of 2016

Image 1

Sony remains confident it can do justice to next generation virtual reality so when the company's Project Morpheus is finally ready for the masses, it will do so under nothing less than the banner of PlayStation. The console and electronics giant officially christened the Project Morpheus HMD (head mounted display) and technology as PlayStation VR at its Tokyo Game Show conference earlier today.

Perhaps not the most ingenius name, but it certainly reaffirms Sony's commitment to the PlayStation branding for products with potential. Like the much anticipated Oculus Rift, the key component to PlayStation VR will be the HMD peripheral which Sony has designed for use with the PlayStation 4 console. The current PlayStation VR HMD prototypes feature a 5.7" OLED screen designed to reduce the sense of motion sickness during use. The setup works alongside the PlayStation Camera and Move controllers to track player movement and positioning.

While Sony admits it is still in the process of refining the PlayStation VR hardware with no release date announced, the company is expected to launch its answer to immersive VR gaming some time during the first half of next year. In the meantime Sony is showcasing tech demos from third party publishers at its TGS floor booth including Hatsune Miku from Sega, Dynasty Warriors 8 from Koei Tecmo, Cyber Danganronpa VR from Spike Chunsoft, and surprisingly Square Enix's MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. Feel the immersion of getting a Mountain Buster to the face courtesy of your ol' pal Titan.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue remasters 3D and brings new stories

Image 1

Square Enix is really taking their time with Kingdom Hearts III. Despite the updates at E3 and last month, fans are still waiting somewhat patiently to hear when they can take up their Keyblade for a new adventure. Instead of giving a release date or window, Square Enix announced during their pre-TGS show today that instead they're working on a new Kingdom Hearts title called Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue. This is more a Heartless collection of games than an actuaul game in and of itself

That isn't to say Final Chapter Prologue doesn't bring anything new to the franchise. While it brings Kingdom Heart: Dream Drop Distance s to the PS4 as an HD remaster, it also brings Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep and Kingdom Hearts: Unchained Chi Back CoverBirth By Sleep was originally a PSP title in 2010, but we only got part of the story. 0.2: Birth By Sleep explores the story from Aqua's perspective as part of a lead-in to Kingdom Hearts III, much like how Chain of Memories explored both Sora's and Riku's sides of the story.

When your Keyblade skills have been sufficiently honed with the HD remaster and 0.2: Birth By Sleep, sit back and enjoy the Unchained Chi Back Cover movie. Unchained Chi Back Cover tells the story of the Foretellers and connects some of the earliest pieces of Kingdom Hearts lore that will be featured in the upcoming mobile title Kingdom Hearts: Unchained Chi.

The 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue collection will be available on the PS4 in Japan sometime in 2016 with a western release likely to follow later on. There's still no word on a Kingdom Hearts III release window yet, but franchise fans might be surprised at Tokyo Game Show this weekend.

Danganronpa 3 will trap you on PS4 and PS Vita in 2016, get away with murder to escape

Image 1

Tokyo Game Show isn't for another couple of days, but that isn't stopping Sony from sharing their plans for the next year. Among those plans was a trailer full of suspicious looking teddy bears. Combine that with Spike Chunsoft, and that can only mean one thing: another Danganronpa game. Danganronpa 3 is coming to Japan in 2016, but that's about all anyone knows at the moment.

In previous Danganronpa titles, players found themselves in a closed-room scenario. In the first game, Trigger Happy Havoc, players were stuck in a school and the only way to escape was to get away with killing one of their friends. The first game in the franchise was originally released in Japan on the PSP in 2010 but was later ported to the PlayStation Vita and localized last year for North America. The second title, Goodbye Despair, placed you in a similar situation except this time they were stranded on a deserted island. Solving the island's mysteries whlie getting away with murder was the only way to escape.

The only details we have on Danganronpa 3 is that it's coming to Japanese PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita systems next year. Spike Chunsoft promises that the upcoming murder mystery title isn't going to be like anything we've seen before, so any speculation at the moment is as good a theory as any. It's a safe bet that those teddy bears are up to no good, though.

Super Mario Maker springs into Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS as new randomized stage

Image 1

Nintendo has recently revealed a new DLC stage for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS based on the newly released level designer, Super Mario Maker. This Super Mario Maker stage will be randomly generated each time it is played, and will be created by the Mario Maker "hand" (as opposed to Master Hand) from the game's plethora of stage trinkets.

The announcement trailer gives us our first look at the brand new stage. The hand, with stylus at the ready, pops in at the beginning of every match and swiftly creates a stage. Obstacles in the Mario Maker stage work as they do in just about any classic Mario Bros. series stage -- brick blocks can be broken and "?" blocks can produce items. If anything is broken by a fighter, the Mario Maker hand will leap to action and "fix" the stage's problems. Helping hands really are nice sometimes.

My biggest question is this -- will the Super Mario Maker stage feature a neutral "Omega" form? The answer is likely yes, but there are currently no details as to what the "Omega" version of this stage will look like or how it will function. "Omega" forms bring a Final Destination / Battlefield vibe to the arena, but this may be tougher to realize for a stage that's all about being randomly generated.

The Super Mario Maker stage will be available for both the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. starting September 30, 2015.

Star Fox Zero director sets sights on prioritizing shooter experience over hi-def graphics on Wii U

Image 1

Star Fox Zero director Yugo Hayashi from Nintendo recently explained the development team's decision to present the upcoming HD Star Fox title through a limited number of polygons. Instead of focusing on pushing visual fidelity, Hayashi believed that is was better to highlight the on-rail shooter's gameplay than to limit players by forcing impressive graphics into the title.

Zero, spiritual successor of Star Fox 64, is similar to its predecessor in many ways. Perhaps the most obvious connection shared by the two titles is the similar graphics style. Both games sport similar camera angles, low polygon counts and little attention to finer detail. As this is the first high-definition entry into the Star Fox series, questions about why the game looks the way it does have been brought up from series fans. Hayashi revealed that looking beyond the visual presentation was key in making the game run as smoothly as it possibly could on the Nintendo Wii U system, especially when taking the second screen of the GamePad into account.

"We decided to have two screens displaying 3D graphics at 60 frames per second. It was this and a few other factors, including it being the first time players will be using two screens like this on the Wii U, that led us to decide to base the graphical design on Lylat Wars. But I’m sure that seeing the Arwing, which everyone is so familiar with, transform naturally into a land-based Walker will be a fun and exciting new experience."

Star Fox is all about the action, but it would have been fun to see the Lylat System in full, high-definition glory for once. Star Fox Zero plans on giving players an impressive on-rail shooting experience, with or without the high polygon count, when the game flies on to Wii U in North America later this November 20.

Dragon Quest VII goes mobile, launches September 17 in Japan

Image 1

If there are two things Japan loves more than anything else in the video game world, it's gaming on the go and Dragon Quest. Combine the two and you get Dragon Quest on iOS and Android devices in addition to the 3DS. Square Enix is no stranger to releasing Dragon Quest games on mobile platforms, as several have already found their way to phones and tablets. The latest game to make the leap this Thursday in Japan is Dragon Quest VII

Relive the mysteries of the islands surrounding Estard as the Hero and his friends travel through time to confront monsters and other evil beings. The massive RPG includes a class system so players can customize each character to their specific liking. Square Enix isn't responsible for phone batteries draining, as Dragon Quest VII can easily eat up  over a hundred hours before you realize it.

Dragon Quest VII's mobile release is currently only for Japan. There have been reports of the title possibly being localized ater, but nothing has been confirmed by Square Enix yet. A page on Square Enix Japan's site that allegedly claimed this mobile port would be coming to the west has since been taken down, so it's best to treat localization as a rumor for the time being.

Pokemon officially unveils new forms for Zygarde and Greninja

Image 1

The official Pokémon site was updated today with all the details confirming new alternate "formes" for Zygarde to add to its arsenal, along with a mysterious new form for Greninja. These were first spotted in CoroCoro magazine scans that were leaked late last week.

The names of the different Formes have been localized as Zygarde Cell, Zygarde Core, Zygarde 10% Forme, and the "perfect" Zygarde Complete Forme. Until this point, players have only encounted the Legendary Pokémon in its snake-like "50% Forme" from the Generation VI titles. It's said Zygarde Complete Forme will be stronger than Xerneas and Yveltal, which is interesting considering its two "shoulder pads" boast colors reminiscent of the two Legendary Pokémon. Maybe the Complete Forme can only be achieved by absorbing the power of the other two? I think the different Zygarde forms look good; the jump from the 10% Forme to the "regular" 50% Forme is a bit of a stretch!

Zygarde Cell
Zygarde Core
Zygarde 10% Forme
Ash-Greninja

Greninja too will attain some sort of new form called "Ash-Greninja" which is said to occur when its bond with anime series protagonist Ash Ketchum is "raised to the limit." Apparently this also entails Greninja taking after some of Ash's current attire. The Pokémon Company is teasing this phenomenon as something that has happened just once "several hundred years ago" in the Kalos region, so of course it's bound to happen again in the anime.

Interestingly, the long-running television anime series is also being updated with a new season starting this October 29th in Japan called "Pokemon XY & Z". Does this mean Pokemon Z is being hinted for 2016?

Nintendo's new president Tatsumi Kimishima advised against the Wii U

Image 1

The very foundations of the video game world were shaken over the summer when Satoru Iwata passed away. The late Iwata-san had a hand in many of the video games we all played and loved and the gaming community came together to issue heart-felt farewells to the man who saved games like EarthBound and Pokémon Stadium. Ever since, Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda had been teaming up to keep Nintendo running while the board of directors searched for a replacement. That search has ended,as the board met this morning in Kyoto and announced that Tatsumi Kimishima will take the reins as Nintendo's president effective September 16.

Kimishima has held several positions within Nintendo over the years, serving as president of The Pokémon Company and as president of Nintendo of America for a few years before moving on to heading the Human Resources, General Affairs, and Corporate Analysis and Administration divisions. Unlike the late Mr. Iwata, Kimishima's expertise in the industry is entirely business related. Kimishima used that business experience to advise against shipping the Wii U console, fearing it would fail because it was too similar to the Wii. While it's hard to argue that 10 million units sold is a failure, the ailing system has had trouble maintaining third party support and has been remaining afloat largely because of first party and indie titles.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Genyo Takeda have been named the company's Creative Fellow and Technology Fellow, respectively. These are new positions created by Kimishima that focus on sharing their expertise by providing advice and guidance to their respective areas of the company. The fellow positions honor the work Miyamoto and Takeda have done over the years for Nintendo The announcement officially describes a fellow as:

"Fellow: An individual selected from among the Representative Directors who has advanced knowledge and extensive experience, and holds the role of providing advice and guidance regarding organizational operations in a specialized area (newly established on September 16, 2015)."

Welcome to the top of Nintendo, Tatsumi Kimishima. May your guidance allow Nintendo to continue to inspire and innovate.

Neil Druckmann wants to make Half-Life 3, but needs Valve to hand over the license

Image 1

No, no, Half-Life 3 isn't confirmed... yet. It might be, though, as The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 director Neil Druckmann is currently courting Valve in hopes that the company releases the Half-Life license to Naughty Dog. Druckmann assured Valve through Twitter last week that all Naughty Dog would "take care of the rest" if they got their hands on Half-Life.

Half-Life 3 is arguably one of the most anticipated video game titles in some time. Fans have been making "Half-Life 3 confirmed" jokes for several years now and likely dying a little inside each time it happens. Valve is yet to make a statement either confirming or denying plans for a third Half-Life. Instead, they opt for evading questions and talk about their process instead of saying whether or not the company plans to make the mythical PC game a reality.

Enter Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann. They're ready and willing to take on the challenge of the Half-Life franchise, but they need Valve's permission to do so. The Last of Us was a highly successful and fun title. Uncharted 4 is also shaping up to be a great game. The ball is in Valve's court here, but they certainly wouldn't have to worry about the future of the Half-Life franchise if it was licensed out.

Brawlhalla's beta 1.17 build brings ranked 2v2 play, balance adjustments

Image 1

Brawlhalla may still be in beta, but it's quickly shaping up to be a potential eSports heavy hitter. The upcoming four-player PC brawler had a new beta build pushed out late last night that included a number of balance tweaks and added a few new features such as the new 2v2 ranked ladder mode.

Ranked 2v2 has been something beta testers have asked Blue Mammoth Games for. It's finally here and it comes with a personal stat tracker as well. Brawlers can view both their personal and team-based matchmaking scores. Players can also join as many teams as they want so personal progress on the ladder isn't impeded by different schedules. A player's personal matchmaking score is also factored in to determining the team score in addition to the win/loss record.

The nerf bat also made its presence known in the form of balance adjustments for various legends in the update. Many of the adjustments were focused on individual weapons moreso than legends, but several brawlers received tweaks of their own. Teros, for example, was slowed down a little with his side axe attack and his downward axe attack was made a little weaker in anticipation of being a strong contender in 2v2. Other legends like Thatch, Gnash, and Lord Vraxx received a bit more attention to make them less frustrating to be matched up against without ruining the fun of playing them.

The standard bug fixes and additional support for things like GameStop PS3 controllers have also been made in the latest Brawlhalla build. Brawlhalla is currently in closed beta. If you're waiting at the gates and weren't a LootCrate customer in July, you can sign up for a closed beta invitation or skip the line by buying one of the different DLC packs offered through Steam. Brawlhalla awaits!

Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One on October 6

Image 1

Frontier Developments CEO David Braben revealed in a Reddit ask-me-anything session this week that Elite: Dangerous will be officially available on Microsoft's Xbox One on October 6, 2015. He also confirmed that the Horizons expansion, coming soon to the PC version of the game, will eventually make its way to the Xbox One.

Elite: Dangerous follows the path that the original Elite took back in 1984. Dangerous takes players through the massive Milky Way and its 400 billion star systems. The game screams "epic space adventure". Players start off with only a tiny spacecraft and limited funds and are ultimately forced to mold themselves into galactic warriors and ultimately join the Elite in outer space.

Unfortunately, not much else has been confirmed for the Xbox One release just yet. Braben has stated that he "does not know yet" if Xbox users will get season or lifetime passes for future downloadable content. At the moment, there is no concrete confirmation that PC players will be able to transfer their content and accounts to the Xbox One version of the game and vice versa, but Braben believes that it is likely in the future. There is no cross-play between the PC and Xbox One versions of the game.

Elite: Dangerous is currently available for $44.99 USD on PC through Steam and will launch on next month for Xbox One systems. As promised, the title will come to PlayStation 4 sometime in the future, but it will be a while -- Microsoft currently has timed exclusive rights to the console version of the game.

August NPD Number Crunch: Summer winds down with Madden NFL 16 owning the pitch

Image 1

Madden NFL 16 was well received by critics when it hit the field last month, and it would appear that consumers joined the chorus in spite of the game's many bugs which were just recently patched this week. The NPD Group confirms that the EA Sports title was the top-selling game last month, displacing strong incumbents like Batman: Arkham Knight and Mortal Kombat X which actually fell off the charts. Rare Replay and Until Dawn also managed to chart on NPD's software top ten for last month, speaking well for the platform exclusives which were also rated well by critics and players alike.

The PlayStation 4 maintained its crown as the top-selling console in August ahead of the Xbox One and Wii U, though hardware sales as a whole dipped slightly 2 percent year-over-year to $190.5 million USD. Software sales suffered a greater 10 percent drop to $207.9 million compared to August 2014. It seems despite the release of titles like Gears of War: Ultimate Edition last month, last year's combo of The Last of Us for PS4 and the console versions of Diablo III proved a tough act to follow. Industry sales overall for the month of August 2015 would ring in to $548 million, a 2 percent year-over-year decline.

Super Mario Maker day-one patch to tweak level design tool delivery system

Image 1

There is some good news for the impatient creators who want to indulge in all the Mushroom Kingdom goodness that Super Mario Maker plans to offer. The nine-day in-game item delivery system that was announced just around a month ago will be replaced thanks to a day-one patch coming when the game launches today.

It was previously revealed in a huge content trailer that many of the level editor tools in Super Mario Maker would not be available straight away when the game first launches. The idea was that Nintendo planned to roll out the tools over a nine day period, provided that players put in at least five minutes of design time each of those days. This feature was not received well by critics with review copies, so Nintendo's work-around is the version 1.01 patch that will overhaul the system.

Unfortunately, there is no exact details regarding exactly what the new system entails. Some assume that items are now delivered based on the player's own play time, perhaps regardless of whether or not all of the obtained tools have been used; the only concrete information that the company has revealed is that tools and items will be rolled out on a more steady basis. Once the patch is downloaded, creators will be free to create and unlock tools on their schedule instead of being held back by the nine-day schedule that was previously in place.

Super Mario Maker, Nintendo's most Mario experience on the Wii U will be available today for $59.99 USD alongside the compatible 30th anniversary 8-bit Super Mario amiibo.

eSports comes to Canada at Enthusiast Gaming Live Expo this November

Image 1

Mark your calendar, Canadians. The Enthusiast Gaming Live Expo is coming to Ontario November 13-15, and it's bringing all the typical expo fanfare. Cosplay, game demos, you name it. Once wallets have been sufficiently emptied by the gaming swag that will no doubt be for sale, check out one of the many eSports tournaments that will be going on.

Over 20 different eSports tournaments will be held at this year's EGLX show with a total prize pool in excess of $100,000. Several expected titles like HearthstoneCounter Strike, Super Smash Bros., and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will be present as well as some games that aren't generally associated with eSports. Sports games don't usually have a competitive scene, but there's just something about Canada and hockey that makes sense for NHL 16 to have a tournament at this year's show.

The full slate of games is yet to be announced, possibly because not all of them have been decided on yet. A host of gaming celebrities will also be present, such as League of Legends player Voyboy, Kripp from Hearthstone, and YouTuber Alpha Omega Sin. EGLX will take place November 13-15 in Mississauga, Ontario.

Final Fantasy V makes its way to Steam, save the Crystals September 24

Image 1

Now that Final Fantasy fans have had a year to relive the epic tale of Cecil, Rosa, and Rydia, Square Enix is releasing another classic entry in the iconic RPG series. Final Fantasy V is now available for pre-order on Steam, allowing franchise fans both old and new the opportunity to experience the story of Bartz and the other Warriors of Light on PC.

Originally released in 1992, Final Fantasy V saw the return of the job system that was temporarily put aside for IV. The traditional classes returned along with several new ones, all of which are needed to combat the evil Exdeath and ruin his plans. The Steam release of V is a port of the mobile version Square Enix launched on the App Store in 2013. While this means there won't be any fancy 3D graphics, the Sealed Temple post-game dungeon that made its initial appearance in Final Fantasy V Advance returns, complete with the dungeon's end boss Enuo.

Combine that with Steam achievements and trading cards for completionists and Final Fantasy V will keep PC gamers busy for a few days in between other major upcoming releases. Final Fantasy V releases on PC September 24.

Pokémon GO brings Pikachu and friends to iOS and Android in 2016

Image 1

Pikachu, I choose you! Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Niantic announced a partnership today to bring everyone's favorite Pokémon to iOS and Android devices in 2016. Titled Pokémon GO, would-be Pokémon Masters will soon be able to catch, trade, and battle their favorite creatures from their smartphone. Nintendo on the go isn't a new concept. In fact, last month they announced a partnership with DeNA to bring some of their games to mobile devices. Pokémon GO, however, isn't one of the games coming out of that collaboration.

Unlike previous Pokémon games that have regions based off of real life locations, Pokémon GO uses location data to generate Pokémon for you to discover as you're going about your daily activities whether it be work, school, or just hanging out with your friends. When you can't get to your phone, Pokémon GO can sync with the Pokémon GO Plus device through Bluetooth. The Plus device will flash and vibrate when a wild Pokémon is nearby, giving you the chance to catch it by pressing a button.

Pokémon GO will bring Pokémon to life on your iPhone or Android phone when it releases on the App and Google Play stores in 2016. Get out there and become the very best that no one ever was. Gotta catch 'em all! Just... watch out for people dressed like Team Rocket. They still want a Pikachu.

NVIDIA Shield Android TV brings all the beauty of PC gaming with GeForce to your TV

Image 1

PC gaming in on your living room TV without having to move our computeres is something many of us would enjoy immensely. After all, who doesn't want to play a modded Skyrim or outsmart opponents in Civilization from the comfort of your sofa? Valve's working to bring us this through Steam Machines and even offer PC gaming on the go with the Steam Boy, but they both run off of SteamOS. Nvidia took one look at the Steam Machine, decided they could do better, and made the Shield Android TV.

The main issue with SteamOS is that it's a Linux-based OS that has limited support on the Steam platform. Nvidia's Shield Android TV bypasses that restriction and offers the ability to stream any PC game, Steam or otherwise, to your TV from your computer. The only catch is that your computer needs an Nvidia GeForce card to do so. The Shield Android TV offers the ability to play using a controller or using a more traditional mouse and keyboard setup.
