It was recently revealed that other iconic characters from Nintendo games were considered as playable characters in Skylanders SuperChargers at one point. Those who have been following SuperChargers know all about the inclusion of "Hammer Slam" Bowser and "Turbo Charge: Donkey Kong into the Skylanders family, but Princess Peach, Fox McCloud and Kirby were also candidates that ultimately did not make it into the game.
Vicarious Visions, the studio in charge of Skylanders SuperChargers, originally brought forth the idea of a character called "Warrior Princess Peach" to Nintendo. She was supposed to have a sword to fight off the rugged Kaos minions in the game, but Nintendo had deemed that all Super Mario series heroes were "off limits". Based on Bowser's inclusion, it appears that this restriction was not placed towards the classic series' enemies.
The pink puffball Kirby and heroic space pilot Fox McCloud were two other characters that were tossed around the concept table for a little while, but were similarly axed for a number of reasons. Kirby, who would have sucked up all enemies in the Skylands, was removed from the drawing board due to licensing issues; HAL Laboratory owns part of Kirby's character and Nintendo was unable to license the pink puffball away to Activision. Fox McCloud, a natural go-to for a Skylanders vehicle game, was denied mostly in part to the upcoming Star Fox Zero. Nintendo did not believe it was a good marketing move to have Fox appear in another game immediately before his title game (developed Platinum Studios) hits the Nintendo Wii U.
While most of this information is not pressing, it's always interesting to get a look inside of the history of a video game's development. Having the ability to play as more famous Nintendo characters in SuperChargers would have been fun, but the Skylanders roster is still large and varied enough. Skylanders SuperChargers is set for release later this September 20th across all major consoles and handhelds.
