Miyamoto still interested in making Super Mario Galaxy 3, no plans for development on Wii U

An interview with Eurogamer recently revealed a bit of cool information for Super Mario Galaxy fans. Series creator (and current acting Representative Director of Nintendo) Shigeru Miyamoto is, and always has been, toying with the idea of another entry into the Galaxy series. It boils down to this: if a third Galaxy title sees the light of day, it will not be until the Nintendo NX hits the shelves at the earliest.

Super Mario Galaxy 3 rumors have been floating around for years now, but it isn't often that Miyamoto himself gives us concrete information on the progress of the possible title. Miyamoto revealed that, while the company is definitely interested in reviving the series in a more official manner, the shift from the 3D Galaxy titles to the 2D New Super Mario Bros. games was so that "anyone can play". The 3D camera, even back in the days of the beloved Mario 64, caused motion sickness and serious difficulty for many gamers whereas the 2D titles were user-friendly across the board.

Miyamoto and Yoshiaki Koizumi, director of the Mario Galaxy titles, are both interested in revisiting the series on the more powerful, more modern hardware than Nintendo currently employs today. Mr. Miyamoto cites CPU speed and development workloads as the main reasons that Galaxy 3 will likely not make an appearance on the Nintendo Wii U:

"Wii U's definitely good enough in terms of hardware performance, it is more the workload of the team. If you look at Star Fox Zero, the TV and GamePad are both rendered in 60 frames, so in total that's 120 frames. It's really just a matter of the CPU speed at this point."

The company is also hesistant to dive into Galaxy 3 at the moment considering all of the other first-party titles that are currently in development or launching soon. Nobody wants to take the spotlight away from what appears to be Nintendo's favorite idea right now, Super Mario Maker, when it releases in just a few days. That, along with Star Fox Zero, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, and Metroid Federation Force, takes precedence in the company's eyes for now.

There is still no definite word on whether or not Super Mario Galaxy 3 will ever see the light of day, but things are looking up for the subseries. All we can do is wait to see and learn more about the Nintendo NX whenever it is revealed in 2016.
