Apple announced their redesigned Apple TV earlier today at a press conference in California. The updated Apple TV brings features such as compatibilty with Siri and access to the App Store, but the most important thing for gamers to know is that it will function as a native gaming device thanks to third-party apps that will be available exclusively through this new device.
The main gamer-friendly addition to the new Apple TV is the inclusion of a physical remote control that is reminiscent of the Nintendo "Wiimote" controller. When held horizontally, games can be played in a more traditional controller style, while holding the remote vertically will allow gamers to use motion controls in the different games that the Apple TV will feature. For those who aren't particularly fond of motion controls, the Apple TV will also support third-party controller peripherals (like the one pictured below) to deliver a more traditional experience. Developers have the option to force these controls for the more standard games that the device may offer.
By allowing their new TV to search the App Store and download third-party apps, Apple has opened up a new world of possibilities. At the moment, we know that console games such as Disney Infinity 3.0 and Guitar Hero Live will be available for download at some point. Developer Hipster Whale has also redesigned their popular mobile title Crossy Road (a more poultry-flavored version of Frogger) to support multiplayer gameplay. It appears that Apple's main push is towards casual gamers who already put large amounts of gaming time into their iPhone and iPad devices, but they are choosing to accommodate enthusiasts as well.
The Apple TV 4 is currently set to launch in late October. Two editions will be available at launch: a 32GB model for $149 USD and a 64GB model for $199.
