Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain tripled PS4 sales in Japan last week, outsold Dragon Quest

Hideo Kojima's final Metal Gear game was released last week. It's only fitting that The Phantom Pain topped this week's Media Create charts in Japan as a final send off to the brilliant mind behind Snake and Big Boss. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King had its time in the spotlight last week, but this week was all about Kojima-san.

Not only did The Phantom Pain debut in the Land of the Rising Sun at a staggering 411,226 units sold over Dragon Quest VIII's 106,823, but PlayStation 4 system sales almost tripled over last week's numbers, making it this week's hottest selling console at 54,494 units sold over the 3DS LL's 26,976 units.

The rest of the top sellers in Japan for hardware and software are more or less the same as last week with a few things trading spots with one another. There are a couple of new names this week, with Minecraft's Vita version and Infinite Stratos 2 making their way into the top ten. 3DS sales are a little down this week with a combined 34,756 sales compared to last week's 42,919.

The Xbox One and 360 versions for Metal Gear Solid V are unsurprisingly nonexistent in this week's sales given the Xbox's lack of popularity in Japan. The strong debut on PlayStation systems, however, is a fitting send off for Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear franchise.
