Square Enix is really taking their time with Kingdom Hearts III. Despite the updates at E3 and last month, fans are still waiting somewhat patiently to hear when they can take up their Keyblade for a new adventure. Instead of giving a release date or window, Square Enix announced during their pre-TGS show today that instead they're working on a new Kingdom Hearts title called Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue. This is more a Heartless collection of games than an actuaul game in and of itself
That isn't to say Final Chapter Prologue doesn't bring anything new to the franchise. While it brings Kingdom Heart: Dream Drop Distance s to the PS4 as an HD remaster, it also brings Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep and Kingdom Hearts: Unchained Chi Back Cover. Birth By Sleep was originally a PSP title in 2010, but we only got part of the story. 0.2: Birth By Sleep explores the story from Aqua's perspective as part of a lead-in to Kingdom Hearts III, much like how Chain of Memories explored both Sora's and Riku's sides of the story.
When your Keyblade skills have been sufficiently honed with the HD remaster and 0.2: Birth By Sleep, sit back and enjoy the Unchained Chi Back Cover movie. Unchained Chi Back Cover tells the story of the Foretellers and connects some of the earliest pieces of Kingdom Hearts lore that will be featured in the upcoming mobile title Kingdom Hearts: Unchained Chi.
The 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue collection will be available on the PS4 in Japan sometime in 2016 with a western release likely to follow later on. There's still no word on a Kingdom Hearts III release window yet, but franchise fans might be surprised at Tokyo Game Show this weekend.
