Destiny's House of Wolves expansion will allow players to upgrade old gear without resetting

Guardians should have a much easier time upgrading old Legendary and Exotic gear once Destiny's Expansion II: House of Wolves hits. Bungie is implementing a new and improved system with the upcoming add-on, one that no longer requires resetting your old gear just to meet the new cap.

This morning's House of Wolves reveal stream offered an in-depth look at how the new system will work, once the expansion goes live on May 19. Ascending weapons will bring old Legendary and Exotic gear up to the new level 34 standard, which for weapons means the difference between 331 and 365 damage. Item progression no longer resets with the ascension process.

So if you have a Legendary to upgrade, all you'll need are some common resources like Spinmetal or Helium, plus Glimmer and one Etheric Light. What the heck is an "Etheric Light?" That would be the new endgame resource in House of Wolves, earned through the Prison of Elders arena and Trials of Osiris PVP. Players who don't own the expansion can still earn Etheric Light for their upgrades, since the new resource can occasionally be earned via Nightfall and Iron Banner events.

Interestingly, new Legendary weapons acquired through the House of Wolves xpac can be Reforged at the Gunsmith NPC, Banshee. Yes, now high-level players will actually have a reason to go visit him again, ammo synths not withstanding. Should you find yourself dissatisfied with the perks on your Legendary, he can actually reforge the weapon with Banshee to randomly change them.

As for Exotic stuff, these top tear items will require an Exotic Shard and other common resources. Xur will no longer offer Exotic Shards come May 19, so it'll likely be made into a drop or some other reward.

My personal favorite change is the availability of Ascendant and Radiant Shards for armor upgrades. Previously your means of earning either relied heavily on RNG, which means many players wound up sitting on way more Ascendant/Radiant Energy than Shards. Well, once House of Wolves hits, the Speaker NPC will begin offering Shards for Motes fo Light, as well as exchang Energy for Shards -- or Shards for Energy.

Bungie said they would be taking lessons from Expansion I: The Dark Below, and it looks like the devs meant it. The entire House of Wolves livestream is available below.
